Henrikson Photography I 19 May 2019 Social Change Project I decided to do mental health as my topic for the social change project. Mental health is a very big and serious issue in our world today. It is often times overlooked or ignored which is why I chose it as my topic to bring more attention to it. Mental health illnesses are very common in our world today, especially in teens. In fact, approximately 1 in 5 kids ages 13-18 experience a severe mental health disorder in their lifetime. Mental health illnesses often times lead to suicide. Suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death in people ages 15-24. Some of the most common mental illnesses are depression, anxiety, Bipolar disorder, Schizophrenia, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, and Social Anxiety disorder. These diseases can be treated, but many people don't seek help. I think mental health is a very important topic because many people are affected by it, but not enough is being done to prevent it. It is especially important to me because I have some close friends who suffer from depression and anxiety. It is hard to see what people have to go through and how to help them. Some things are being done to help mental health diseases, but I don't think it is enough. It is really sad that so many people are so sad that they think ending their life is the only option. Much can be done to treat depression and other mental health diseases, so suicide should not be the second leading cause of death. I think that people should be more aware and educated on mental health so they know how to help those in need. It is hard to tell when someone is suffering from a mental health disorder because they always put on a fake smile. It is always the people you would least affect. My photographs will illustrate people suffering from mental health disorder most likely being depression and anxiety. I hope that my art will show people how serious mental health is. My first piece consists of a person and some flowers. I layered a black and white photo of my sister with a photo of some flowers. I adjusted the opacity so that the flowers looked as if they were apart of her face and the background. A dominant principle that I used was contrast. I applied this by changing the contrast of tones in both the black and white photo and flower photo. The meaning of my photo is to illustrate the beauty in children. I like to think of this as a successful piece of art. To make it better, I could possibly clone stamp some of the logo on her shirt because it is slightly distracting.
My second piece of art consists of a multiplicity of my friend, Sydney. I created different layers and adjusted the opacity of each to create a cool effect. One dominant principle in this piece is repetition. I applied this by making copies of each layer and cutting the person out. The meaning of this piece is happiness in Minnesota winter. I would say this is a successful piece. To make it better, I could maybe use some more principles of art to add more depth to the piece. Shadow
My first image is a black white photograph consisting of a bike that is casting an elongated shadow on a path. There are sun rays shining at the top and a small bridge in the background. Reflection My second image consists of a series of trees being reflected into a creek. The image is is black and white except for the reflection itself is in color to show the blue water and brown trees. |
